If you’d like to see the bigger picture of where this journey is heading, you can read more here:
I believe that everything I receive ultimately comes from God, and I want to steward it faithfully.
Because of that, I set aside at least a tithe (a tenth) from the support I receive through this project.
At this stage, while I still have other sources of income, my giving is not solely dependent on this support. But as this journey grows and becomes more sustainable, I intend for this tithe to come directly from what is given through this work.
In the future, I plan to share more details about where these contributions go as this becomes a larger part of my livelihood.
This is simply part of how I choose to honor God with what I’ve been entrusted with.
In the economics of the kingdom of God, you get by giving. Now, giving and receiving isn't always money, nor is giving in and of itself the principle that will generate a multiplied return.
The Hebrew word for "tithe" means "a tenth", and is referred to in the Bible as giving a tenth of everything that is produced for the work of God's kingdom. In an agrarian society that was dominant in the past, produce and livestock were commonly offered as a tithe. In a modern society where most people perform services for money, financial tithing is more commonly practiced. We can also offer our time to volunteer for work that build's God's kingdom on Earth.
While the Old Testament—or Torah—refers to giving a tenth of one's increase, the New Testament Scriptures do not designate a percentage that should be given; rather, it refers to the proper attitude of giving. In other words, it's not the amount given, but the attitude in which it is given that matters, and those who live a lifestyle of giving often give more than ten percent of their income as they decide in their heart (2 Corinthians 9:7).
Although the Bible often refers to the concept of giving in order to receive in multiplied amounts (Proverbs 3:9-10; Malachi 3:10; Luke 6:38; 2 Corinthians 9:6-11), the attitude of giving in order to get more in return is incorrect and stems from greed. This kind of giving comes from the perspective of lack. It's a kind of giving that attempts to manipulate God to give back in abundance in order to fulfill their lust for things and pleasures. It is a misunderstanding of life's priorities and what we have received in Christ.
In Matthew 6:33, Jesus commands us to prioritize above all else the kingdom of our Heavenly Father and His righteousness (right-standing with that government), and the resulting promise is that all of our necessities will be added to our lives. In Luke 12:32, Jesus comforted His disciples saying that it is our Father's good pleasure to give us the kingdom. In John 3:3,5, Jesus said that one must be born-again in the spirit to experience the kingdom of God.
Through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, our Heavenly Father has provided everything that we will ever need to accomplish His purpose for our lives—healing, deliverance, prosperity, and more! Many religious people shirk the concept of prosperity, an attitude that is derived from the belief that the only thing that matters is going to Heaven. While that is important, Jesus taught us to pray for God's kingdom and will to be done on Earth just like it is in Heaven (Matthew 6:10).
God has a plan for us here on Earth, but He doesn't send us to fulfill our purpose without the necessary provision to fulfill that purpose. Prosperity can be simply defined as having the necessary resources and provision in order to fulfill God's assignment for your life, and that assignment will always be directly tied to seeking the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Prosperity goes beyond merely acquiring money and can include success in your work, which will inevitably have a positive impact on your finances.
Since we have already received everything that we will ever need in our spirit through Jesus Christ, the concept of giving a tithe in order for our Heavenly Father to give it back to us in multiplied amounts is simply the wrong attitude! It expresses an unbelief that God has not provided everything we will need.
So why is giving an important part of receiving? While we have received all things for life and godliness through the knowledge of our Lord (2 Peter 1:3), all these things are deposited into our spirit. The AMP version of Hebrews 11:1 says, "Now faith is the assurance (title deed, confirmation) of things hoped for (divinely guaranteed), and the evidence of things not seen [the conviction of their reality—faith comprehends as fact what cannot be experienced by the physical senses]." It is important to note that giving without faith will not activate God's promises (Hebrews 4:2); this includes giving out of obligation or through coercion. Faith is the bridge between the spiritual and the physical worlds. Faith manifests in the physical world the spiritual realities that have been provided to us by grace. Faith cannot produce what grace has not already provided (Ephesians 2:8).
Because we have received the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ—which is overflowing with abundance—we give not to receive more (which is impossible since we have already received everything), but to activate the spiritual principles that allow God's provision to flow into our lives for the building of His kingdom on Earth. Giving or "tithing" is a spiritual principle that God established and it is activated by faith according to our hope (positive imagination). Giving in such a way requires faith because nothing tangible is seen or felt at that moment or for some time. Nevertheless, it initiates activity in the spiritual realm that will cause prosperity to flow into your life to meet the needs for your God-given assignment. This is why our Heavenly Father wants us to give (Malachi 3:10). As His children redeemed through Christ, when we give, it provides our Father the opportunity to bless us in this life on Earth (Mark 10:29-30).
